6th Dec 2019 - Bilbao Guggenheim - Mark Rothko
Over the past few years I have come to value the of use audio guides when visiting museums. A good audio has provided a more intimate and rich experience than I previously had and I’m extremely grateful to those who organize such well thought out programs. I’ve spent extensively more time in the galleries observing and appreciating the artworks but also understanding the artists who made them. Mark Rothko is one artist I have admired since a lecture at the Royal College of Art in 2011/13 (most notably his later works) and who’s work I have stood in front of many times since, but never taken the time to again understand until now.
“If I had to put my trust in something, it would be in the psyche of sensitive observers who are free of conventions about understanding. I would have no apprehensions about the use they might make of these paintings for spiritual needs. If both are present, need and spirit there must be real transection.”
Untitled, Oil on canvas 299.5 x 442.5cm
“While some artists sought theoretical justification in science and technology, others like Mark Rothko dedicated their attention to geometric art based on spiritual, contemplative and symbolic values.”
